Ashford University: HCA 430- Week 3 Discussion 2

Question:

What situations have you witnessed or experienced where one or more of the theory models in this chapter could have been applied? What would have been the strengths and weaknesses of two of the models? Why? Reply in 250-300 words. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.

Answer:

One theory that could be utilized and I think we do use it at times is the behavioural modification theory. If you apply the concept of behaviorism to our own career, we would associate working towards goals as a means to achieve bonuses (positive reinforcement) and not acting in immoral or unethical means to avoid disciplinary action (negative reinforcement), however negative reinforcement is best avoided with clients. We can spend a bit of time to understand client’s motivations and utilize that while communicating or working with them, it can have a positive effect. The benefit of the theory is that this can behavioural change without placing the burden of responsibility for change on the client’s shoulders. While this may work, one needs to understand that this cannot be applicable in all situations and there is a need for the worker to correctly ascertain the benefits of using the techniques. Another theory is marketing theory. Social workers may not be available for a number of people who do not have the means to approach them or be able to take their services. Creating reaching out programs and making available the available resources for them with an objective to create welfare services for them is not only a noble task but also the need of many in the society. The issue with this could be lack of available resources. Another potential issue could be the difficulty in managing change for these people who may be needing the service but may find it difficult to adapt to the new ways for a better tomorrow (Levine, 2013).
